For the longest time, metal braces were seen as the only option for straightening crooked or misaligned teeth. With the advancement in dental technology, more options like quick braces have become available. Teeth straightening is not simply rejuvenating the smile, but it also impacts the physical health of the person. Crooked teeth can give rise to various health and dental issues. When the teeth are straighter, they are easier to brush or clean. This means that those who have straighter teeth have lesser chances of suffering from gum disease and bad breath. It also improves ones ability to speak clearly. We are here to tell you all about braces.
What are the different types of braces?
Various kinds of braces can target crooked teeth. They can be broadly divided into two categories: fixed and removable orthodontic appliances. Metal braces are fixed braces that have been around for the longest time. Apart from that, there are various options to choose from, which include lingual braces, fast braces and ceramic braces. Here is some more detail about them.
- Fixed Metal Braces: These braces are extremely reliable and are often used to target complex orthodontic concerns. Their metallic appearance can be off-putting for some.
- Ceramic Braces: Made out of tooth-coloured ceramic, they dont impact facial aesthetics. Due to this, they tend to be an expensive option. They are not an ideal choice for those who grind their teeth or have a deep bite.
- Lingual Braces: Their shape and design are the same as traditional metal braces. These braces are bonded to the inner, tongue-facing lingual teeth surface, making them completely invisible. They can increase the chances of soft tissue injury and are not suitable for those with deep bites. Lingual braces can also cause discomfort.
- Fast Braces: Traditional braces and fast braces work similarly.Minimal retainer wear is required, meaning, comparatively lesser time is taken to straighten the teeth. This orthodontic procedure is not the ideal choice for treating all orthodontic concerns.
- Invisalign Aligners: This orthodontic treatment involves using removable aligners to straighten the teeth. It makes use of transparent and flexible aligners, which cause gradual movement. What makes aligners an attractive option is that it is easier to maintain oral hygiene, no restrictions on diet, and there is no visible change to facial aesthetics. However, complex orthodontic issues cant be targeted through this treatment option.
What happens when braces have been worn for too long?
The length of the treatment is dependent on the complexity of the case. It could take anywhere between 18 to 24 months to straighten crooked teeth. If one follows through with the dentists instructions and undergoes regular checkups, the time of treatment can be reduced. When braces are worn for a long time this can lead to complications like white spots, tooth decay and tooth sensitivity. If worn for longer, it increases the chances of plaque and tartar accumulation around the brackets which can lead to gum diseases.
